The next afternoon, Jen headed down to the office for her weapons certification, Troy in tow. “You know you’re going to be bored, right?”

“Actually, since you’re going to be with your team, I’m going to go take care of a few personal things in the area. Don’t worry, though, I’ll be here when you get out.”

With a resigned sigh, Jen headed into the New World Response building. Downstairs in the training area, J.J. was waiting for her, as well as a man Jen didn’t recognize.

“Jen, this is Damian Sterling, from Sterling and Associates Certification Testing. He’s going to be running your test today.”

Jen shook the offered hand and tried to keep her nerves from showing. “Sorry, I’m a little nervous.”

Damian nodded. “This must be your first certification test. It’s usually a lot easier once you know what’s going to happen, so let me explain that to you. First of all, there is a written test. That will be seventy five questions, some of which are true/false, some are multiple choice, but the majority are short answer. You can take as long as you need on that portion. It’s not timed. After that, we’ll get into your weapons use testing.”

J.J. led them over to a table that had been moved a short distance from the others. Two pencils and an extra eraser were already waiting for her. Once she took her seat, Damian pulled a packet of paper from his briefcase and handed it to her. “Once you’re finished, go ahead and bring this back to me and we’ll get into the rest.”

Jen nodded and opened the packet. She scanned the questions and discovered that most of the beginning section consisted of questions about when to draw a weapon and what type of situation was considered acceptable for lethal force. Another question asked how many times she had to warn before she had to fire her weapon once it was drawn.

The next section was a lot of scenario descriptions, where she had to use the information given to decide whether lethal force is justified, whether the target in question was dangerous to others or not, and what she should do in a similar situation. Most of the scenarios involved humans, but a handful were regarding werewolves and vampires.

Another section was devoted entirely to assessing her knowledge of vampires and werewolves. There were questions on anatomy, laws about the use of silver and ultraviolet weapons, and some basic identification questions to see if she could tell the difference between human, werewolf, hybrid, and vampire.

The written portion of the test took much longer than she had anticipated and she hoped that the weapon use portion wouldn’t be as long. However, she knew that she would be tested on a lot of weapons, so that portion might take longer than anticipated as well.

“Oh, well,” she mused to herself. “Troy will just have to be patient.”

After she completed the written test and handed it over to Damian, she was allowed a break to get more coffee while he looked over her answers.
